Project Brief
Our clients came to us with a straightforward yet ambitious brief. They desired a 3-bedroom home with an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area, as well as bathrooms that all enjoy the breathtaking view across Christchurch. They envisioned a modern, comfortable, and architecturally striking home. Positioned on a steep slope, the site is long and narrow, offering extraordinary views that had to be maximized. With this clear objective and unique site, our designers set to work.
Concept
Creating a seemingly simple building can involve a lot of hidden complexities. Our lead designer, Matt Wilkie, aimed for an elegant home that blends seamlessly with its landscape. The result is a meticulously detailed building that appears effortlessly integrated into its surroundings. The combination of form and cladding materials plays a crucial role in this success. The natural stone cladding grounds the building into the hillside, while the soft, vertical timber cladding envelops the structure from top to bottom. The glazed box in the centre feels airy and spacious with floor-to-ceiling windows and minimal joinery.
The interior layout mirrors the exterior's simplicity with a straightforward, no-nonsense design. The central living area occupies one end of the house and features an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space that extends to a large outdoor living area. This exterior space includes an outdoor fireplace, built-in BBQ area, and panoramic views of Christchurch. The bedrooms, ensuites, bathroom, and master suite are all connected by a straight hallway on one side, and all enjoying the view on the other.
